Chaffetz: Cannon Wrong on Iraq Contractors

October 16, 2007

Jason Chaffetz’ response to Mr. Cannon's comments in the
Salt Lake Tribune’s article, “Cannon: Iraq security
contractors shouldn’t be subject to U.S. criminal laws”
(http://www.sltrib.com/ci_7177869) :

“I am deeply concerned Mr. Cannon can so easily dismiss the
rule of law while the United States continues fighting to
institute it. Excusing 100,000 private contractors from
that rule of law sends a disturbing message to our troops,
to Iraqis, and to the rest of the world. We are exporting
democracy and freedom to Iraq, not lawlessness.

While it is understandable that a war zone may invite a
different level of scrutiny than downtown Provo, handing
contractors free get out of jail cards is reckless and
irresponsible. Even Blackwater U.S.A. encourages more
oversight and accountability. To accept Mr. Cannon’s
position on this issue undermines all of the hard work our
servicemen and women have invested to win the hearts and
mind of the rank and file Iraqi citizens.

Contractors, as is the case with our own servicemen, need
to be bound by a code of behavior and accountability worthy
of those representing our nation. We owe it to ourselves,
and to the Iraqis. The United States of America should
lead by example and hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Mr. Cannon is wrong. As Utah’s 3rd Congressional District
representative, I would vote for more accountability
similar to those working with the Department of Defense.”
