Chaffetz cheers NFL’s decision to give up tax-exempt status
Responding to persistent congressional criticism, the National Football League is giving up its tax-exempt status.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, calls the move a win for taxpayers. He has sponsored legislation that would legally require the NFL to pay taxes and he threatened to call Commissioner Roger Goodell before the Oversight Committee, which he leads.
"It is an issue of fairness," Chaffetz said. "Nobody was buying the idea that the NFL is not for profit. The commissioner and I had a good discussion today and [the NFL] agreed to do the right thing and I applaud them for it."
